Our story…
Our Beginnings
The Lawton-Ft. Sill Juneteenth Celebration began in 1997 through the passionate efforts of community leaders, Carol “Cookie” Green and Albert Johnson Sr. Their vision was to bring the rich legacy of Juneteenth to life in Lawton, Oklahoma, creating a space to honor African American heritage, celebrate freedom, and bring the community together.
What started as a local observance quickly grew into one of the area’s most anticipated cultural events. Over the years, the celebration expanded into a vibrant, three-day festival filled with music, theater, talent showcases, games, soul food, and spirit-filled worship services.
Sponsored by the Lawton-Ft. Sill City-Wide Juneteenth, Incorporated—a nonprofit organization—the entire event has remained free and open to the public, staying true to its founders’ mission of inclusivity, education, and unity. For nearly three decades, the celebration has brought together generations of families, civic leaders, veterans, and youth to honor the past and inspire hope for the future.
